KALYAN: A group of 19 cyclists has started their ride from Kalyan to raise money to fund scholarships for underprivileged students studying in Zilla Parishad schools in rural areas of Murbad taluka in Thane district. On Saturday morning, cyclists started their ride from Durgadi bridge in Kalyan. The cyclists will pedal through difficult terrain from Kalyan to Delhi at their own expense. Dr Rehnuma Ehteshamuddin, a rider from Bikeport cycle group said, "The scholarship fund accumulated through bicycle riding will be distributed to 501 meritorious students from rural and tribal areas of Thane district". Rehnuma said, "So far we have collected Rs 7 lakh before the journey starts, and during the journey, we are expected to collect more money for the study of students". The cycle journey will continue for a week. Cyclists have decided to cover a distance of 200km every day. Most cyclists are aged over 40. On December 2, the cyclists plan to reach India Gate in Delhi.

KALYAN: The Khadakpada have arrested a history-sheeter two years after he had escaped from the 15th floor of multi-storied Tata Amantra quarantine center in Bhiwandi.The accused, Ghazidara Irani Jafri (27), have multiple chain snatching cases registered against him. Two years ago, he was arrested in Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) charges. On the run in two years, he also committed 12 more chain snatching and vehicles thefts cases. A police team on Tuesday went to nab Jafari at Lahuji Nagar area near Kalyan, where the accused was hiding. Sachin Gunjal, deputy commissioner of police, zone 3 of Thane police, said, "After receiving specific information when team went to nab Jafari, he tried to flee by attacking police team with chilly spray. However team overpowered accused and nabbed him." Police have recovered three stolen vehicles, knife, air gun and chilly spray from him.The police said Jafari is resident of tainted Irani basti area in Ambivali where many chain snatchers reside. In April 2021, looking at Jafari’s role into several chain snatching cases, Jafari was booked into MCOCA charges and was shown arrested and was sent to Adharwadi jail. However, Jafari tested Covid positive that time due to which he was taken to a quarantine centre situated at Tata Amantra for treatment.At quarantine centre, Jafari removed the glasses from the window and came down from the pipes before escaping.
KALYAN: The police have traced an employee Pankaj Mishra, who went missing 18 days ago while on duty in the Century Company located in Thane district. The police said Mishra was trying to hide, however, police found that as he was in debt and had taken loans he decided to run away as he was unable to pay the loans
KALYAN: The two-day rose show began at the seminar hall of BK Birla college by Kalyan Rose club in association with Mumbai Rose society and Inner Wheel Society. In the show, roses of different varieties, colours and sizes are displayed for citizens as well as college students.The show was inaugurated by Kalyan Rose Club president Santosh Chitlange. About 250 varieties of over 2,000 roses from Pune, Nashik, Kalyan are being displayed in the exhibition.
KALYAN: The State Excise department on Saturday arrested two persons and seized liquor worth over Rs 56 lakh and a BMW car following searches conducted on a Mumbai-based wine shopkeeper in Kalyan and Bhiwandi. While the team has arrested accused Sandeep Davani, 34, and Hanumant Thange, 62, search is on for main accused Deepak Jaisinghani residing at Kalyan.Nilesh Sangade, Supritendent of Thane Excise Department said, "Acting on a specific information on Saturday evening, a search was launched at a godown situated in Bapgaon area in Bhiwandi where our team seized 266 boxes of liquor and nabbed two accused. During the enquiry, the team further checked the BMW parked outside Jaisinghani's residence in Kalyan and recovered 25 boxes of liquor.""The recovered liquor has been manufactured in Daman and Haryana. The accused used to smuggle it to Maharashtra and sell."
